Seth Sabah Serwonoo-Banini, the Metropolitan Chief Executive for the Awutu Senya East Municipality, says the major issue in the area is sanitation, especially at the Central Business District (CBD).
He stated that although the municipality is large, the focus has always been centered around the CBD because it is the entry point to the municipality.
He was reacting to an update on the decongestion exercise being organized by his office to clear traders off the pavements and streets in the CBD.
In his remarks, the MCE noted that their major concern in Kasoa is sanitation around the CBD. Interestingly, Kasoa is a large area, but judgment has always been based on the CBD because it is the entry point.
Management of the issue has been ongoing, but it has not succeeded. They are determined to provide a lasting solution to sanitation and congestion issues.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he said his office has deployed dialogue to address these challenges.
Upon assuming office three weeks ago, he found that the sweepers in the area working under Zoomlion were on strike, so he had to find other means to deal with the sanitation situation.
Another issue he discovered was that some people were disposing of waste indiscriminately around the CBD; some of these individuals have been arrested and prosecuted.
He attributed this to politically motivated activities from both the opposition and within his party.
”We also discovered that some miscreants or politically motivated persons within and outside our party have contracted people to dump waste at the CBD. These individuals dump their waste after the municipality has swept and collected it. These individuals include those who use tricycles and others who bring waste from their homes. So, we deployed our task force to monitor the situation. We arrested and have prosecuted some of them, while the rest are awaiting prosecution.”
Meanwhile, he announced that the municipality lacks compactor trucks for carting waste and has appealed to the Sanitation Minister to intervene and provide one or two trucks to ease their activities.
Additionally, the municipality does not have its own dump site and depends on areas outside the municipality.
However, he assured the public that a location has been identified, officials have examined it, and it has been established that it will not pose any health challenge if used as a dump site.
