President John Dramani Mahama has proposed the decentralisation of management of schools, underscoring the need for district directors to be in charge in their respective districts.
He opined that this approach will help reduce teacher absenteeism and stop the payment of salaries to teachers who have left their jobs.
The President made the remarks during the presentation of the National Education Forum Report on Thursday, June 5, 2025.
In his view, it’s inappropriate for the Ghana Education Service in Accra to manage schools in rural areas.
According to him, district directors must be given greater autonomy so they can properly manage schools in their districts.
He also stressed the need for recruitment of teachers for vacancies to be declared at the district levels.
‘’Local governments, district education offices, school boards and community leaders must be given greater authority, flexibility and accountability in managing our schools. Centralised decision-making has led to delays, inefficiencies, and disconnection from the local realities. Decentralisation will not only improve service delivery but also restore a sense of ownership and urgency at the grassroots level.’’
He added, ’’We must give greater authority to the district directors and make them autonomous to be able to manage the schools. That is where we would be able to know which teacher has not come to school; teacher absenteeism and all that will be well managed”.
