President Mahama requests clemency for 64 suspended radio stations

June 12, 2025
Mahama-George

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation to work in collaboration with the National Communications Authority (NCA) to immediately restore the broadcast of the 64 stations that were taken off air.

Government Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu disclosed this in a statement issued today, Thursday, June 12, 2025.

The directive was issued after the ministry shut down 64 stations in connection with regulatory breaches.

The National Communications Authority (NCA) ordered the immediate suspension of operations by more than 60 FM broadcasting stations across the country.

The affected stations include Asaase Radio and Wontumi FM, over multiple regulatory breaches.

They were found to be operating with expired authorisations, unpaid licence fees, or failure to meet set-up conditions stipulated under the Electronic Communications Act and its accompanying regulations.

But the president says the regulatory compliance must take into account the need to uphold and enhance media freedom.

According to the statement, the president believes requiring radio stations to shut down while awaiting the regularisation of their authorisation could limit the space for expressing such freedoms.
