Host of Weekend Morning on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Papa Taste, has asked Bernard Antwi Boasiako, aka Chairman Wontumi, to keep his intended apology to President John Dramani Mahama to himself.
The radio host stated that the politician, who is the Chairman of the New Patriotic Party in the Ashanti Region, went rogue prior to the elections, insulted the President, and made terrible remarks about him and his Vice President, thinking that the lies and insults he peddled would have made the NPP win the elections, but they lost.
He described the victory of President Mahama as a vindication that Ghanaians trusted him and believed he would deliver on his promises. Papa Taste wondered why the NPP as a party allowed their party Chairman to insult and denigrate Mr. Mahama and his Vice without calling him to order.
He noted that the apology Chairman Wontumi intends to deliver to the President is not needed because it is not coming from a genuine place of remorse.
The Ranking Member on Parliament’s Health Committee, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, recently revealed in an interview that some senior figures of the party are planning to pay a formal visit to President John Dramani Mahama to offer an apology on behalf of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman.
Chairman Wontumi is currently under investigation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for alleged financial offences, including fraud and money laundering, and for illegal mining activities known as galamsey.
Dr. Ayew Afriyie acknowledged that the actions of the party’s regional Chairman were inappropriate, referring to widely circulated videos in which Wontumi made personal attacks.
“Wontumi went overboard in some of his videos. I played a lot of them to show him on June 9. I told him we will go and beg, if we have to kneel down in front of President Mahama, and tell him that in those videos, he crossed the line,” Dr. Afriyie explained.
Reacting to the issues raised, Papa Taste stated, ‘Keep your apology. If you have anything to do, call your Chairman and examine where you faulted and think about what best to do and the lessons you have to draw from what happened. President Mahama does not need your apology. Ghanaians spoke for him, and their massive endorsement of him in the elections spoke volumes. If Ghanaians had not voted for him in the 2024 elections because you peddled lies against him, he would have had no other opportunity to do so for himself.
This is the vindication I was talking about. He underscored the need for politicians to desist from insults and peddling falsehoods about their political opponents, since that would undermine our democratic credentials.”
He stressed that the youth of Ghana should be shielded from the politics of vilification and attacks.’
