The Member of Parliament for the Evalue-Ajomoro-Gwira constituency and a member of the Energy Committee of Parliament, Mr Kofi Arko Nokoe, has stated that postponing the implementation of the GHC1 levy on fuel products is the most appropriate decision.
He said the move affirms that the President John Dramani Mahama-led government remains committed to providing leadership that prioritises the welfare of the people.
The Ghana Revenue Authority has indefinitely suspended the implementation of the GH₵1 levy on every litre of petrol and diesel, originally scheduled to take effect on Monday, June 16, 2025.
The suspension follows consultations with stakeholders, and a new effective date will be communicated in due course.
Commenting on this, the lawmaker stated that the decision to suspend the implementation was influenced by recent spikes in global oil prices and a commitment to protect consumers from escalating fuel costs.
Speaking in an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Mr Kofi Arko Nokoe said postponing the implementation of the GHC1 levy on every litre of fuel is crucial and demonstrates that the government is sensitive to the plight of Ghanaians. The levy was introduced to help generate GH₵5.7 billion annually to reduce Ghana’s over $3 billion energy sector debt and ensure fuel supply for power generation.
However, the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel could trigger an increase in fuel prices on the global market, and implementing the levy would create difficulties for Ghanaians. As a sensitive government, we would not hesitate to go back to parliament to amend the law if fuel prices increase.”
He maintained that the government remains committed to dealing with the energy sector crisis and providing Ghanaians with stable power.
“We’ve not cancelled it totally. It is on hold for now, and I am optimistic that the conflict between Iran and Israel will be resolved. We have been putting in measures to make sure that the cedi remains stabilised. All things being equal, we have to take decisions as a government to generate the needed resources to manage the country.”
