The Metropolitan Chief Executive for the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has delivered a final warning to traders who have effectively taken over streets and pavements for selling within the Central Business District (CBD).
In a directive issued on Monday July 7, 2025, MCE Allotey stressed the need to restore order and clear pedestrian walkways and roads, which have become increasingly congested due to unauthorised commercial activities.
The MCE said that, effective Tuesday, July 8, 2025, all items seized from traders who defy the directive will no longer be handed over to them.
Mr. Kpakpo Allotey expressed worry about the stubbornness of the traders, stating that they have refused to adhere to the directive.
According to him, the traders are fond of bribing AMA’s task force so they can continue to engage in their activities.
He has, however, warned that when items are seized, they will be sent to the Nsawam Prisons and be given to the inmates.
He said this when he led a team of AMA officials on a tour of the CBD on Monday, July 7, 2025.
‘’ We are not saying we are removing you from where you are. We have specifically asked you to adhere strictly to the ‘redline policy’ to regulate trading on designated pavements across the metropolis. We reintroduced the redline policy as part of efforts to restore order, enhance pedestrian safety, and promote environmental sanitation. But you have refused to adhere strictly to it.
We have been here on three different occasions to engage you, and yet you have refused to listen. So, effective Tuesday, July 8, 2025, when we seize your items, you will no longer get them back. We will send them to the Nsawam Prisons and donate them to the inmates,’’ he warned.
