Hon. Francis Kwabena Berepong Owusu-Akyaw, Member of Parliament for Juaben, has posed crucial questions to the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku. The questions revolve around the ministry’s plan to support schools with food supplies.”
According to Hon. Owusu Achiaw, we need to know if the Ministry of Food and Agriculture will partner with schools to source food from local farmers. Additionally, we want to know if the food is intended for school feeding programmes or for export.
The Ministry’s initiatives, such as the Planting for Food and Jobs programme, aim to boost food production and availability.
He said, Partnering with schools could support local farmers and enhance food security.”
The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku, in his response, emphasised the importance of school farming, citing its potential to transform the perception of agriculture as a profession and improve food security in schools.
According to Minister Opoku, school farming can help shift the narrative that farming is a punishment, instead showcasing it as a valuable profession that sustains livelihoods. By utilising school farms to produce food, schools can support their own feeding programmes, reducing reliance on external sources and potentially improving food quality.
According to him, the initiative could have multiple benefits, including teaching students valuable skills in agriculture and food production.
Enhancing food security and nutrition in schools, promoting sustainable practices and environmental stewardship and supporting local economic development through school farm produce.
