The Member of Parliament for Garu has commended the President for demonstrating exemplary leadership in upholding fiscal responsibility.
Dr Thomas Anaba praised the president for tightening their own belt before asking the general population to do the same, showcasing accountability and transparency in their actions.
“The president is walking the talk by demonstrating a commitment to fiscal responsibility,” Dr Anaba said. “This approach shows that the president is serious about ensuring that the government lives within its means and prioritises the welfare of Ghanaians.”
President John Dramani Mahama has, with immediate effect, cancelled the payment of fuel allowances and the allocation of fuel to all political appointees as part of broader efforts to reduce government expenditure and promote fiscal discipline.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.
Dr Anaba expressed full support for the president’s approach, hoping that it would continue. “It’s great to see leaders being held to high standards and taking responsibility for their actions,” he added.
The MP also highlighted the importance of transparency and accountability in government transactions, citing the example of fuel allowances and coupons for government appointees. “The auditors play a crucial role in ensuring that financial documents and transactions are transparent and accountable,” he said.
“Any irregularities or unauthorised transactions would be detected and addressed, with consequences for those involved.”
Dr Anaba emphasised that the system has built-in checks and balances to prevent misuse of funds. “We have a system in place that ensures accountability and transparency, and it’s working,” he concluded.
“We should continue to support and strengthen this system to ensure that our government is truly accountable to the people.”
