The Ghana National Association of Cocoa Farmers has welcomed the announcement by President John Dramani Mahama to pay cocoa farmers 70% of the world market price.
The President of the Association, Stephenson Anane Boateng, commenting on the issue, stated that it is a campaign promise that President John Dramani Mahama is fulfilling.
He stated that during the 2024 campaign season, the president met with them and promised that if elected, his government would implement a 70% payment structure based on the world market price for cocoa farmers.
Speaking on ‘Frontline’ on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he said, “We’ve heard about the news from the President.
During the campaign period, President Mahama promised to give us 70% of the world market price for our cocoa.
This is a formula enshrined in the constitution.
It affirms that President Mahama wants to reset the country. He has demonstrated that he is prepared to work in accordance with the constitution.
“He has also demonstrated that he is a promise keeper and someone who can manage the affairs of the country. We only hope this would be done. He promised and has delivered. This clearly shows that he respects our constitution,” he added.
Stephenson Anane Boateng maintained that cocoa farmers had been treated unfairly for years and in clear violation of the constitution, and “as a people, we don’t have to go along that path.”
He added that the government has no commercial cocoa farms and depends on cocoa farmers for support but does not reciprocate this.
