The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has disclosed that the government has earmarked a retooling fund of One Billion Ghana Cedis for the security services.
According to him, the police service will be allocated a significant portion of the fund.
The minister disclosed this while speaking at the Regional Commanders Conference of the Ghana Police Service in Accra.
Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak stressed the need for the police to operate with neutrality, professionalism, and rapid response capability during elections.
He encouraged the police to make use of international best practices to curb armed robberies, including predictive policing through data and intelligence, community policing revival, targeted special operations, smart surveillance technology, and rapid response units.
He stated that any police personnel found engaging in unauthorised protection services for celebrities, businesspeople, and political actors without proper approval will face strict disciplinary action.
He then advised the Inspector General of Police to audit all current VIP protection arrangements and ensure full compliance with police regulations.
On his part, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, said the conference offered them the opportunity to review strategies and tackle challenges, ultimately enhancing the effectiveness of the police force in serving their communities.
He concluded by commending the commanders for their successful efforts in disrupting criminal networks in their respective regions.
