Osman Seidu Osco, a cybersecurity expert, is sounding the alarm: our online actions have real-world consequences.
While social media is a powerful tool for connection and information, he reminds us that it’s not a lawless space. In fact, robust laws are in place to protect us from online abuse, and those who violate them can face serious prosecution.
According to Osco, the distribution of child pornography, nude photos, and other explicit content is a clear violation of the law.
He warns that anyone involved—from the person who posts the content to those who share it—can be traced and held accountable.
In a recent interview, Osco emphasised that unchecked and unethical activities on social media can have a far-reaching impact on Ghana.
‘’A failure to safeguard the fundamental human rights of individuals online could lead to severe consequences, including stifling economic growth by making international investors hesitant to put their money into a country where individual rights are not respected, and causing international embarrassment that could tarnish Ghana’s reputation on the global stage and strain its relationships with other nations.’’
Osco also highlighted the urgent need to address the rising tide of cyberbullying, online scams, and fraudulent financial activities.
He urged the public to be more vigilant and to always verify information before sharing it. By doing so, we can protect ourselves from falling victim to fake news and other deceptive practices that plague the internet.
