The President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Professor Eric KK Abavare, has expressed skepticism over former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo’s defense of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s tenure as Chief Justice.
In a statement, Mr. Abavare said he was “surprised but not surprised” by Justice Akuffo’s defense, citing the “protect our own” syndrome that often plays out in such situations.
However, he questioned the logic behind her argument that Justice Torkornoo’s removal would weaken the judiciary.
”The question is, were some members of the Committee not part of the Judiciary? So those members are anti-Judiciary?” Mr. Abavare queried.
He also pointed out that Justice Akuffo remained silent during her tenure as Chief Justice from 2017 to 2019 when a similar process was used to remove the then Electoral Commission Chair, Charlotte Osei.
”Does this period tell you something? Is the office of the electoral commission much less of importance than the Office of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court?” Mr. Abavare asked, adding that he doesn’t take Justice Akuffo’s comments seriously.
