David Kankam Boadu, a hopeful for the position of National Chairman for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed his belief that the party is on a destructive path. He stated that the party’s current struggles have reached an “alarming” level, likening the internal disputes to a boxing match.
He warned that if the party does not change course, it risks becoming irrelevant, similar to the Convention People’s Party (CPP) after the death of its founder, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
He lamented that the party has lost sight of its founding principles and the sacrifices made by its originators. He emphasized the urgent need for the NPP to reconnect with its roots to avoid losing the 2028 general elections.
A Call for Integrity and Selflessness
According to Mr Kankam Boadu, the party needs leaders of “integrity and dedication” rather than “selfish and greedy personalities.”
“The founding fathers of the NPP established the party through selflessness, dedication, commitment, and sacrifices,” he said. “But today, selfishness, greed, and infighting have taken over. The party is heading towards destruction, and we must rescue it.”
He noted that the party’s current “winner takes all” mentality, coupled with internal anger, has transformed it into what he called a “boxing association.” He believes this has damaged the party’s credibility and is alienating members.
“I am the only credible candidate to be elected as Chairman to restore the party to its lost glory,” he asserted.
When asked if his comments constituted anti-party behavior, Mr Kankam Boadu responded that he was simply pointing out the party’s struggles to save it.
“The party is facing struggles, and I am only pointing that out for us to save the party,” he explained. “We need to rescue the party. The founding fathers have kept quiet, and so the new crop of party people think what they are doing is right. We have decided to take action and restore dignity to the party.”
He claimed that a division among party members has led to a significant drop in its parliamentary seats. He outlined three distinct groups:
- Group 1: Members who did not vote in the 2020 election, causing the party’s parliamentary seats to drop from 169 to 136.
- Group 2: Members who did not vote in 2024, leading to a further reduction to 88 parliamentary seats.
- Group 3: Those who support either Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia or Kennedy Agyapong.
Mr Kankam Boadu stated that he is the only candidate who does not align with any of these factions, declaring his sole loyalty to the NPP. “NPP is at the intensive care unit and in a coma,” he said, emphasizing that internal divisions will not help the party.
He pledged that if elected, his primary objective would be to unite the party and secure a victory in the 2028 elections. He added that if he successfully achieves this, he would “honorably step aside,” having fulfilled his objective.
