Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has revealed that he offered to step aside from politics if his religion or tribe were found to be the cause of his party’s 2024 electoral defeat.
Speaking at a campaign event today Wednesday September 10, 2025, he addressed past allegations that his identity as a Muslim and a member of the Mamprusi ethnic group had contributed to the party’s loss.
Dr. Bawumia recounted a post-election meeting with former President Nana Akufo-Addo and other party officials, where he made his position clear.
“I told Nana Akufo-Addo… that if after the Professor Oquaye’s probe, it is established that my tribe and religion contributed to our defeat, I will step down because there was no way I would allow my personal interest to override that of the party,” he stated. “I will put the party first ahead of my own interest.”
According to Dr. Bawumia, the subsequent report by the Professor Oquaye Committee exonerated him, concluding that the allegations were unfounded.
He dismissed these claims as “petty gossip” and urged party delegates to ignore them.
“Recently they have even added a new gossip claiming that my wife is not a true Ghanaian,” he said, describing the attacks as an unsuccessful attempt to find fault.
During his interaction with party officers in Kumasi, the Vice President emphasised his significant sacrifices for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He asserted that his contributions cannot be understated, contrasting his dedication with those who he says are now attacking him.
Dr. Bawumia detailed how he left “various international and local jobs” on three separate occasions to serve as the running mate for former President Akufo-Addo, highlighting this as proof of his unwavering commitment to the party.
