The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has issued an urgent appeal to authorities, requesting that all necessary measures be taken to prevent any further increment in fuel prices.
The GPRTU has indicated that it currently has no intention of increasing transport fares; however, recent hikes in fuel prices are severely undermining this commitment.
Speaking on the Frontline program on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Samuel Amoah, Deputy Communications Officer for the GPRTU, reiterated that the union’s plan is to maintain the current fare structure.
He explained that any rise in transport fares disrupts their operations. While the union prefers not to implement an increase, persistent fuel price inflation would leave them with no viable alternative but to adjust fares.
Mr. Amoah further highlighted that fare increases disproportionately affect passengers, particularly those whose salaries have remained stagnant.
This creates a significant financial burden for the commuting public, mirroring the challenges faced by commercial drivers.
”We had decided to maintain the current fares until the end of the year, but the recent increase in fuel prices is challenging that resolution. That is why we are calling on authorities to address the situation,” he stated. “Fuel plays a key role in our business, and the recent sharp increments will inevitably have an effect on our operations. A rise in fares affects our work, and we also have the interest of passengers at heart. We do not want fuel prices to increase again, and we urge authorities to intervene.”
