Madam Nyonkopa Daniels, Executive Director of Peace Watch Ghana, has voiced her shock following an incident she witnessed while caught in traffic over the weekend near the Ring Road area.
The peace advocate recounted that while waiting at a red light, she observed two Honda Civic vehicles blatantly breach traffic regulations by running the red light.
What truly astonished Madam Daniels was the response she received from the police officers on duty at the location.
According to her account, when she questioned the officers about their failure to pursue the violators, their response was unsettling: “Even if we arrest them, in minutes they will call people in higher authority to have them released, and so it would be needless to do that.”
Madam Daniels stated that this justification was deeply concerning, as these reckless drivers not only endangered the safety of other motorists and pedestrians but could potentially have been armed individuals attempting to evade lawful arrest.
Call for Action and Non-Interference
The Executive Director has since appealed to the Ghana Police Service to take immediate action in addressing this systemic issue, arguing that such tolerance of impunity will severely demoralize their frontline officers.
She also strongly advised people in positions of authority to cease interfering with police work and allow law enforcement agencies the necessary autonomy to apply the law without hindrance.
Madam Daniels emphasised that no one is above the law, and as a law enforcement agency, the Police Service must be given the free hand to “crack the whip” on those who violate it.
