Private legal practitioner Kwesi Bitchway Junior has petitioned the Attorney-General requesting an update on EOCO’s galamsey investigations regarding NDC’s National Organiser, Joseph Yamin, and National Vice Chairperson, Abanga Yakubu.
His petition comes after six months without any update on the probe into these two officials after they were accused of being involved with illegal mining activities.
The Attorney-General instructed EOCO to institute investigations into suspected illegal mining activities being perpetrated by certain individuals within mining districts in the country.
Mr Botchway is requesting the following:
1. The current progress of the investigations;
2. Any interim findings EOCO has submitted to the AG’s Office;
3. Expected timelines for the completion of the investigations.
In a post he shared on his Facebook page, he noted that “This request is borne out of growing public concern, corroborated by media reports and intelligence, regarding the involvement of some citizens, particularly members of the current government, in unauthorised mining operations (‘galamsey activities’).”
It is my considered opinion that, in line with the national stance, any findings or whatsoever by EOCO ought to be made public.”
