Benjamin Avornyotse, Director of Communications and Strategic Partnerships at the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), has affirmed the organization’s unwavering commitment to combating cybercrime, regardless of the perpetrator’s identity or nationality.
Speaking in an interview on ‘As it is in Ghana’ via Rainbow Radio, Mr. Avornyotse emphasized that the CSA’s primary focus is the eradication of criminal activity.
He noted that because cybercrime is a cross-border issue, Ghana maintains active collaborations with international partners to share information and crack down on these activities.
“It is cybercrime that we are targeting. We do not target any specific group of nationals,” he stated, reiterating that security agencies will not hesitate to take action against anyone involved in such offenses.
His comments follow the recent arrest of 141 suspects allegedly involved in various digital crimes such as mobile money fraud, cyberstalking, the impersonation of public figures, and romance scams.
Addressing concerns regarding the status of those detained, Mr. Avornyotse acknowledged that in previous cases, some individuals arrested were actually victims lured into Ghana and held hostage to perform these crimes.
However, he clarified that no such evidence has been found in this latest operation, though further investigations are ongoing to rule out such scenarios.
Mr. Avornyotse urged the Ghanaian public—particularly landlords and property owners—to be vigilant regarding the activities of their tenants.
Referring to the recent arrests, he suggested that the landlord who rented out the premises should have been more suspicious of the activities occurring on the property.
“We are calling on property owners to collaborate with the CSA and other security agencies,” he advised. “The more we crack down on these cybercrimes, the more we boost our national reputation. It also ensures our citizens are safer to conduct their digital lives without being targeted by criminals deliberately setting up shop in our communities.”
He concluded by advising the public to fulfill their responsibility by reporting any suspicious behaviour to the authorities immediately.
