The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially triggered disciplinary proceedings to expel former minister Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng from its ranks.
The decision to expel the celebrated heart surgeon follows a controversial television interview in which he reportedly disassociated himself from the party and levelled serious allegations against its leadership.
He described the party as fake, indicating the elephant has lost its relevance.
In a press statement released on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP cited a Monday interview on Channel One TV as the primary reason for the move.
According to the party, Prof. Frimpong Boateng described the NPP as a “fake party” and explicitly stated that he no longer considers himself a member of the party.
The statement described these claims as “baseless and unsubstantiated”.
”The said primary has been widely acknowledged by all candidates who participated, as well as by well-meaning members of the Party, as having been conducted in a free, fair, transparent, and credible manner,” the statement read.
Leadership of the NPP expressed deep disappointment in the professor’s remarks, characterising them as “reprehensible and inimical to the values, unity, and integrity of the party.”
While Prof. Frimpong Boateng had already signalled his personal departure from the NPP in his interview, the party leadership is seeking a formal expulsion to protect the party’s image.
The General Secretary confirmed that the NPP has now invoked relevant provisions of its Constitution to commence the expulsion process, promising that the move will be carried out “strictly in accordance with due process.”
