Hon. Ernest Norgbey, Member of Parliament for Ashaiman Constituency, has cut the sod for the construction of a modern three-storey maternity block at the Community 22 Polyclinic.
This follows concerns raised by health officials and residents in the area regarding the pressure on existing healthcare infrastructure.
The Ashaiman Municipality records over 6,000 deliveries annually, placing immense pressure on the existing healthcare infrastructure, which health authorities describe as woefully inadequate.
According to statistics from the Municipal Health Directorate, the Ashaiman Health Centre, the primary government hospital, manages 47% of all deliveries, whereas the Community 22 Polyclinic handles 11%.
The decision by the MP to construct this project is to ease the burden on health professionals and also bring professional care to patients who come to the facility.
This project aims to enhance maternal healthcare services in the municipality, reflecting Hon. Norgbey’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure.

The MP noted that the project, expected to be completed within 12 months, will provide a more conducive environment for both mothers and healthcare professionals.
Freeman Tsekpo, Municipal Chief Executive for Ashaiman, stated that the government has released funds from the District Assemblies Common Fund to facilitate the timely completion of the maternity block.
Dr Sophia Quist, Ashaiman Municipal Health Director, commended the initiative, emphasising that the new maternity block will significantly improve maternal and child health services in the municipality.
