Richmond Edem Kofi Kpotosu, the Member of Parliament for Ho Central, has robustly defended the government’s economic record, rejecting criticism from the Minority in Parliament.
The opposition has accused the government of manipulating economic data, claiming that despite seemingly positive indicators, the average Ghanaian is yet to feel the benefits.
According to the Minority, the government’s macroeconomic achievements are not translating to improved living standards for citizens. However, Hon. Kpotosu dismissed these claims, suggesting that the opposition is predisposed to criticising the government, regardless of progress.
“They’ll complain no matter what,” he said, implying that the minority’s stance is driven by politics rather than substance.
The MP emphasised that the government’s performance should be judged by the tangible improvements in Ghanaians’ daily lives.
He cited notable gains in key economic areas over the past year, including a reduction in fuel prices from GH¢17 per litre to GH¢9.99 per litre and a stabilisation of the cedi, which now trades at around GH¢10 to the dollar, compared to GH¢17 previously.
Hon. Kpotosu attributed these developments to the government’s sound economic management and urged Ghanaians to remain optimistic about the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration’s policies aimed at bolstering the economy.
The MP added that, ultimately, the Ghanaian people will be the ones to assess the government’s performance, saying, “The people will decide.”
