The Member of Parliament for Akrofuom has claimed that the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its affiliates continue to unfairly criticise the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) because they no longer have the opportunity to misappropriate state funds.
Joseph Azumah noted that the NPP’s primary desire was to remain in power indefinitely to exploit the state’s resources at the expense of the Ghanaian people.
He made these remarks in response to criticisms levelled by the NPP and the minority caucus regarding the 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA).
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, Azumah argued that the opposition’s negativity is rooted in their failure to retain power.
He asserted that Ghanaians have witnessed significant improvements during this government’s first year, highlighting drastic price reductions for essential commodities such as rice, maize, and fuel.
Addressing the host, Kwabena Agyapong, Azumah defended the President’s address: ’We are not saying we’ve resolved all the crises or we are in heaven, but comparing the period we are in today to what we witnessed under the NPP, we can boldly state that we have seen remarkable change. The people are the best judges of that—not the NPP MPs who are being unfair to the government.
Ghana is now at a point where there is hope, trust, and transformation. Security is at a point where Ghanaians can sleep soundly. The SONA was a true reflection of our current situation. He delivered a SONA that was evidence-based, with facts and figures. You cannot dispute what he presented.”
He further accused the opposition of moving goalposts regarding economic indicators.
”When you hear the NPP MPs tell us today that a reduction in inflation is not something we can consume, it is a sharp contradiction from how they had made political capital of our inflationary figures… It was the hope of the NPP that they would have stayed in power so they could continue to milk our state resources. We can only commend President John Mahama for the SONA.”
He added that the previous government laid contractors on the Agenda 111 hospitals, the Pawlugu and other projects, and yet these projects remain uncompleted.
