“Officiating A World Cup Final And Introducing VAR In Ghana Is My Ultimate Dream” – GFA Referees Manager
The Referees Manager of the Ghana Football Association, Alex Kotey, has revealed his bold vision for the future of officiating in Ghana.
In an exclusive interview, GFA Referees Manager Alex Kotey expressed that his heart’s greatest desires are to see a Ghanaian referee officiate the final of the FIFA World Cup and also introduce VAR in the Ghana Premier League.
Referee Kotey stressed that Ghana has produced talented referees over the years, but the ultimate dream is to see one of them take charge of the biggest match in world football — the World Cup final.
In addition, the GFA Referees Manager called for the introduction of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system in the Ghana Premier League.
He believes implementing VAR will enhance fairness, reduce controversial decisions, and raise the credibility of the domestic league.
He stressed that achieving these heartfelt wishes is feasible and achievable, which requires improved technical training and financial commitment.
“Basically, I have two desires, and they are doable. The first one is to get a Ghanaian referee to the FIFA World Cup and officiate the World Cup finals. If not from the current crop of FIFA referees that we have, I’m looking at the next generation of FIFA referees. We will get there; if they are able to keep up with the work, the education and training that we have given them, I am sure we will get there. When I came into refereeing, my target was to officiate at the highest level in football, the World Cup.”
“The second wish has to do with technology. Now refereeing is all about technology, so in the next five years, God willing, I want to see that we have implemented the VAR. It is one thing on the heart of the Ghana Football Association president, and I want to ensure it is implemented. If I am able to do that, I am at peace.” – he added
