You’ve started selling the gold reserves we left, so fix the CLOGSAG issues and stop blaming NPP – Suhum MP

Frank Asiedu Bekoe, Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Employment, Labour Relations, and Pensions Committee, has urged the government to engage in sincere and respectful dialogue with the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) to resolve its ongoing indefinite strike.

The Suhum MP noted that the government must refrain from political posturing and focus on practical solutions.

He said that the strike has caused significant hardship for citizens reliant on state agencies.

Speaking in an interview on Rainbow Radio’s Frontline, Mr Bekoe stressed that labour issues require thoughtful consideration rather than politicisation.

He further argued that the current administration should prioritise results over rhetoric, noting that attributing current challenges to the previous government does little to help the average worker.

Mr Bekoe criticised the government’s reliance on macroeconomic statistics, such as declining inflation or exchange rates, noting that these figures do not reflect the reality of the people’s struggles.

He called on the government to stop using the dollar as an excuse while the purchasing power of citizens continues to dwindle.

He accused the president of treating Ghanaian workers with disrespect by granting a 9% salary increase to civil servants while allegedly increasing the salaries of presidential staffers by over 54%.

He added that the situation is exacerbated by recent increases in electricity and water tariffs by 28% and 15%, respectively.

Parliament has already called on the government to honour existing agreements with the union and address feasible concerns.

This follows CLOGSAG’s declaration of strike action over poor working conditions and the failure to implement agreed-upon terms of service.

“The government should stop blaming the previous government for its failures. They took over from us and have already sold appreciable tonnes of the gold in our reserves. So, if there is a challenge, they should resolve it. They should stop blaming others or engaging in posturing.”
