Hon. Emmanuel Kofi Ntekuni, MP for Pru West, has lauded President John Dramani Mahama’s health sector reforms, saying his leadership inspired national development and unity.
Speaking during the State of the Nation Address debate, Mr Ntekuni noted that health is the backbone of national productivity.
“When a visionary leader speaks, he inspires national development and unity by presenting a compelling, hopeful, and clear future that resonates with the aspirations and hopes of the people,” Ntekuni said, citing Mahama’s commitment to health sovereignty and domestic financing.
He pointed to the challenges faced by the previous administration, including a drastic decline in donor support from 19% to 2.2% and the withdrawal of US aid for essential health programmes.
“This was a defining moment, and His Excellency chose to lead and act decisively,” he said.
Comparing the current government’s performance, Hon. Ntekuni noted that in 2026, direct government funding for health was 72% of total health spending, whereas the current government allocated only 56.8%. “This is not accidental; it’s a deliberate commitment to domestic health financing and health sovereignty by His Excellency John Dramani Mahama,” he stressed.
He also praised the National Health Insurance progress under Mahama, citing increased enrolment (57% to 66%) and timely claim payments. “This is reform in action, protecting universal health coverage through sustainable funding,” he said.
In his view, there have been measurable reforms, including increased domestic financing, improved NHIS claim payments, and infrastructure expansion.
“From neglect of chronic and non-communicable diseases to tangible action, we need to continue this progress,” Ntekuni urged.
