The Minister of the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has disclosed that over 4,000 firearms have been voluntarily surrendered by civilians as part of the government’s gun amnesty programme.

He noted that approximately 11,000 firearms had already been retrieved from civilians by authorities prior to the official amnesty period.

The launch of the amnesty encouraged a significant number of individuals to legally surrender their weapons.

Speaking on Hot Issues on Sunday, March 15, 2026, the Minister said, “That’s why we came in with the amnesty. And when we rolled out the amnesty period, the statistics showed that we were able to retrieve over 4,000 guns in the hands of civilians.”

The Minister further stated that the collected firearms are currently undergoing documentation and marking by security authorities in preparation for their eventual destruction.

The gun amnesty, he asserted, forms part of a broader government strategy aimed at curbing the proliferation of illegal arms and enhancing public safety nationwide.

Additionally, he highlighted that the programme has made substantial progress in removing unlicensed firearms from circulation, thereby supporting the ongoing efforts of security agencies to combat violent crime and enhance community security across Ghana.
