The massive infrastructural, human, and logistical investment by the Member of Parliament for the Jomoro Constituency of the Western Region, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, for the past six years has begun yielding results.

The MP, who is also the Deputy Minister of Transport, has for years now been championing education in her constituency with investments into teachers, students and pupils, infrastructure and logistics, thereby prompting others to emulate.

The MP, in the year 2022, launched an initiative aimed at supporting students with materials not covered by the Free SHS policy. Under the initiative, Madam Affo-Toffey has constantly donated items such as mattresses, trunks, chop boxes, and other essential items to students who are entering the senior high schools.

The latest was when she distributed over 500-600 brilliant but needy students entering senior high school in the year 2025, apart from several school buildings she personally financed.

Due to these, one of the schools in the municipality, Peace International School from Half Assini, emerged as the winner in the Western Regional quiz competition as part of activities marking the region’s Independence Day celebrations, with 65 points.

Two other schools that also competed were Tarkwa Goldfields School Complex, which placed second with 43 points, and Woodbridge Academy from the Effia Kwesimintsim Municipality, which secured third place with 32 points.

The quiz was initiated by the traditional leadership of the Western Region to promote academic excellence among basic school students.

Fourteen schools representing various municipalities and districts participated in the contest.

Commenting on her hard work, determination, and excellence that have yielded the result, Madam Affo-Toofey said, “I am deeply touched that my small promise of a surprise package served as motivation for these young champions.” ”.

“This victory is a testament to what our children can achieve when they are supported and encouraged. Their decision to dedicate this award to me is truly humbling, and I look forward to receiving it on behalf of the good people of Jomoro. ”.

The deputy minister said, “This is just the beginning—together, we will continue to invest in education and empower the future leaders of our constituency.” ”.

The Jomoro Municipal Assembly Public Relations Officer, Sylvester Yankey, reacting after the victory, said, “The MP has been very instrumental in supporting education, and her support in education has yielded this result.” ”.

“We have been in this competition for ten consecutive years, and for the last seven years, it was either third or second, so this year, I told the MP we needed her support. She told us she will support us but added she needs the trophy. ”

Mr Yankey said, “I promised her definitely we were going to bring the trophy this year, and she gave us the needed support…both financially, spiritually and morally.” ”.

“During the quiz, she (the MP) was chatting on with me about how the quiz was going, and I assured her we were going to bring the trophy home,” he explained.

The pro said, “She has done a lot in education because about 90% of her common fund is in education.”

“Building schools, donating laptops to education offices and others. The MP rewarded this year’s top-performing students in a more impactful way, replacing the Assembly’s planned GH₵500 cash prizes with educational devices. The best male and female candidates in the 2025 WASSCE received laptops to support their transition to tertiary education, while the top male and female BECE performers were presented with educational tablets to aid their academic journey,” Mr Yankey explained.
