Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to complete and operationalise all stalled Agenda 111 hospitals, a project initiated by his administration.
He made the call while speaking at the launch of the Kyebi Government Hospital’s centenary celebrations organised by the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional State and the Kyebi Government Hospital.
According to him, the completion of these hospitals will significantly enhance the quality of healthcare delivery in the nation.
“We must also be honest; not every project was realised, and not every project was completed. At some facilities, we reached advanced stages that could not be finished before our term ended. Agenda 111 must be continued. Continuity, not disruption, is how health systems succeed,” he said.
The Overlord of Akyem Abuakwa State, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, on his part underscored the need for the facility to be retooled.
“I am not the only one frustrated, but the nurses and doctors over there are equally frustrated. 100 years later, there is no scan machine in Kyebi Hospital; there is no quality laboratory in Kyebi Hospital,” he bemoaned.
The Medical Superintendent of the Kyebi Government Hospital, Dr Isaac Adu-Opoku Antwi, in a media interview after the launch disclosed that children are sharing the same wards with pregnant women, which is negatively impacting the quality of healthcare.
He has therefore appealed to authorities to construct a maternity block, a children’s block, a physiotherapy unit, and a bungalow for health workers.
The previous government introduced the Agenda 111 as part of efforts to improve Ghana’s healthcare system by providing quality medical facilities across the country.
The project, led by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, includes constructing 101 district hospitals, 6 regional hospitals, 2 psychiatric hospitals, and rehabilitating existing facilities to ensure universal access to healthcare, aligning with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 3.
