The Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced his decision to ‘step down’ amidst a tumultuous period for football on the continent.
Veron Mosengo-Omba stated in a release that he is retiring.
His decision, however, coincides with the controversy surrounding the stripping of Senegal’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and the last-minute postponement of the women’s tournament.
In his statement on Sunday, March 30, 2026, Mosengo-Omba hinted at the controversies that have marked his tenure.
“I have decided to step down from my position as secretary general of CAF to devote myself to more personal projects,” wrote Mosengo-Omba, deputy to CAF president Patrice Motsepe.
“Now that I have been able to dispel the suspicions that some people have gone to great lengths to cast on me, I can retire with peace of mind and without constraint, leaving the CAF more prosperous than ever.”
He will be replaced by competitions director Samson Adamu as acting general secretary.
