The Ministry of Health has taken a significant step toward the implementation of its free primary healthcare initiative with the arrival of a massive consignment of medical machinery.

Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister for Health, personally inspected the 24,534 pieces of equipment this week, marking a turning point in the nation’s efforts to modernise its clinical infrastructure.

The vast inventory is destined for health facilities across the country, aimed at ensuring that no patient is turned away due to a lack of basic diagnostic or treatment tools.

Amongst the thousands of items being prepared for dispatch are life-saving neonatal units, including baby incubators, radiant warmers, and oxygen concentrators specifically designed to resuscitate newborns.

This focus on maternal and infant health sits alongside a broader procurement of hospital and delivery beds, intended to increase ward capacity in rural and urban centres alike.

During his inspection, the Minister emphasised that this retooling exercise is the backbone of a more resilient healthcare system.

He noted that the arrival of vital sign monitors, patient monitors, and infusion devices will allow clinicians to track patient recovery with greater precision.

Additionally, the inclusion of laboratory analysers, X-ray machines, and ultrasound scanners suggests a move towards faster, on-site diagnostics, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for simple tests.

Diabetes screening is also set for a boost, with thousands of glucometers included in the package to assist in early detection and management of the condition.

Ministry spokesperson Tony Goodman confirmed that the distribution is designed to enhance the capacity of government hospitals to handle primary cases efficiently.

The deployment of these resources is expected to begin immediately, providing the necessary logistical support to make the government’s promise of free primary healthcare a reality for all citizens.
