A longstanding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, Nana Kwadwo Agyei Yeboah—widely known as Nana Kay—has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of National Organiser while issuing a scathing critique of President John Mahama’s recent remarks regarding the LGBTQI+ issue.
Nana Kay suggested that the president has failed to learn from past experiences, demonstrating a lack of discernment in his leadership.
He further argued that, contrary to the president’s claims of returning to office to restore Ghana, his current actions are achieving the exact opposite.
According to Nana Kay, while in opposition, President Mahama assured the Christian community, Muslims, and other religious groups that his administration would ensure the passage of the relevant bill.
However, during a recent meeting with civil society groups, the president claimed the matter was not a priority.
This shift in stance has reportedly infuriated the Ghanaian public, who perceive the move as a deceptive betrayal of previous commitments.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Nana Kay indicated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) previously capitalised on the LGBTQI+ debate by accusing President Akufo-Addo of refusing to assent to the bill.
He questioned how a government that gained support based on these promises could now claim the issue is no longer a priority, noting that many citizens voted for Mahama specifically because of this pledge.
Nana Kay expressed the view that the president is unsettled by the recent withdrawal of his honorary doctorate from Lincoln University and is overly concerned with the international community’s perception of Ghana. Consequently, he argued, the president has compromised his stance on the matter.
Nana Kay also cited the concerns of the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, who has expressed a desire to see the bill passed and assented to during his lifetime. He asserted that this remains a vital issue and that the president must heed the will of the majority.
The aspirant emphasised that there is no issue more pressing than these “disgusting gay and lesbian issues”, noting that they are condemned by the Bible, the Quran, and Ghanaian culture alike. He further alleged that some teachers in secondary schools are engaging in such acts with students.
Although he did not name specific institutions, he maintained that these “evil and insane acts” are occurring in several schools. He concluded by stating that LGBTQI+ practices are an “abomination” that destroys not only individuals but entire nations.
“And the president is telling us that is of less importance to him? This is the greatest insult I have witnessed from a president. There is no pressing issue like these disgusting gay and lesbian issues. The Bible is against it. The Quran is also against it. Our culture frowns on it, and so we cannot claim that this is not a priority. It is a major or critical issue we have to deal with. There are several schools where these evil and insane acts are taking place.”
