The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has achieved a significant breakthrough in the fight against violent crime following the successful arrest and conviction of suspects involved in a high-value gold robbery in Obuasi.

The incident, which involved the theft of gold and cash totaling approximately GH¢2.29 million, took place on 3 April 2026. This rapid investigation has already resulted in the sentencing of two individuals, while a third remains in custody to assist with further enquiries.

Addressing the media during a press conference at the Ashanti Regional Command, ACP Cephas Arthur provided a detailed account of the case and the subsequent judicial outcomes.

He explained that the victim, Abdul Malik Yahaya, was targeted while travelling home on a motorbike along the Obuasi–Asonkore road.

According to the police report, two suspects operating a tricycle—locally known as a “Pragya”—deliberately collided with the victim’s motorbike. This forced him to the ground, causing injuries and allowing the attackers to flee with gold valued at GH¢1.75 million and GH¢540,000 in cash.

Following an intensive, intelligence-led operation, the police apprehended four suspects on 8 April 2026. The key individuals identified were 19-year-olds Rashid Adams and Godfred Ampadu, along with 23-year-old Dominic Naazie.

Preliminary investigations established that Adams allegedly operated the tricycle used in the ambush, while Ampadu was directly involved in the physical attack and subsequent theft.

During the course of the investigation, the suspects led officers to a wooded area where the stolen gold had been hidden beneath a cement block.

Furthermore, the police impounded a vehicle suspected to have been purchased with the stolen funds, suggesting a degree of premeditated criminal organisation.

A crucial development in the case revealed that Dominic Naazie, who was an employee of the victim, allegedly acted as an insider.

It is believed he provided the critical information necessary for the suspects to plan and execute the robbery.

Consequently, the suspects were arraigned before the Bekwai Circuit Court on charges of robbery and conspiracy to commit a crime.

In the ensuing legal proceedings, Rashid Adams and Godfred Ampadu pleaded guilty and were convicted on their own pleas.

The court sentenced Adams to 30 years for robbery and 20 years for conspiracy, while Ampadu was handed a 25-year sentence for robbery alongside a 20-year term for conspiracy.

Both men will serve their sentences concurrently. In contrast, Dominic Naazie pleaded not guilty and has been remanded in custody, with his next court appearance scheduled for 24 April 2026.

Commenting on this, ACP Cephas Arthur praised the professionalism and dedication of the officers involved in the operation.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to maintaining safety throughout the region and urged the public to remain vigilant.

On behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, he assured citizens that the police would continue to protect them in their daily lives, while reminding the public that effective policing remains a shared responsibility between the community and the authorities.
