Akim Oda MP Accuses MCE of Facilitating Illegal Mining Activities

April 13, 2026
Acquah-Akwasi-Alexander

The Member of Parliament for the Akim Oda constituency, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has alleged that the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Akim Oda continues to facilitate illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey.

He lamented that these activities in the area have reached alarming levels, claiming that members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) are actively involved in such criminal enterprises.

The lawmaker stated that while in opposition, the NDC accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of engaging in galamsey, yet they have now taken over and are destroying various communities within the constituency.

He specifically accused the MCE, Mr Solomon Kusi Brako, of being the individual facilitating the operations of illegal miners.

Mr Acquah alleged that, although certain individuals were arrested and fined for their involvement in galamsey, the situation remains compromised.

He noted that some of the affected persons aligned with the NDC recently criticised the MCE on a WhatsApp platform, and the audio recording of these complaints has since been made public.

During the disclosure, Alexander Akwasi Acquah mentioned an individual named Vincent Sedjara, who was reportedly issued a receipt (number 03729141) and required to pay GH₵15,000 on 25 September 2025.

Speaking to host Kwabena Agyapong on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, the MP explained that each issued receipt consists of an original and two duplicates of different colours.

He detailed that the original is typically light blue or green-white, while the duplicates are pink or off-white.

He observed that the MCE recently held a press conference where he presented original receipts rather than the duplicates that should have remained in the booklet.

This, he noted, raises significant suspicion, as standard practice dictates that the original receipt is always issued to the payer. Mr Acquah argued that the MCE’s possession and presentation of the original receipt suggest an attempt to cover up alleged extortion.

He added that the fact the original remained in the booklet a month after it was purportedly issued further supports the notion that the MCE is attempting to fabricate evidence, suggesting no receipt was actually given to the payer.

When asked if he was certain of these accusations, the MP remained emphatic.

He stressed, “The MCE is facilitating illegal mining activities. I will not come on air and make allegations without any evidence. I have evidence to support my claims. The MCE is facilitating illegal mining activities. The NDC accused the NPP of engaging in galamsey activities, and yet they have taken over and are destroying our water bodies. I know what I am talking about. President Mahama must take action. This is a running story. I have written several petitions and even sent one to the president, but no government official has responded. What they do instead is call me privately to tell me to stop talking about this. But I will not stop. So long as illegal mining continues, I will continue to present the evidence and expose those behind it. Recently, President Mahama affirmed that some of his people are engaged in galamsey. I spoke about this some time ago, even before the President made his public remarks.”
