The Ghana Police Service has apprehended a suspected gang leader and an accomplice linked to the fatal robbery of a Berekum Chelsea FC bus on the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road.
The attack, which occurred on Sunday, April 12, 2026, tragically claimed the life of footballer Dominic Frimpong, sparking widespread mourning across the Ghanaian football community and prompts from the Ghana Football Association for swift justice.
In response to the incident, the Inspector-General of Police dispatched a specialised manhunt team comprising intelligence officers from the Police Intelligence Directorate, the Anti-Robbery Unit, CID Headquarters, and the Ashanti Regional Commands.
This coordinated effort culminated in an intelligence-led operation on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at Atimatim in Kumasi.
During the raid, police arrested the alleged gang leader, Mohammed Ahmed, known as “I Can Do”, and Bawa Gideon following a violent confrontation.
The suspects attempted to evade capture by opening fire on the officers, resulting in a shootout that left one suspect injured.
He is currently receiving treatment under police guard at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, while the second suspect remains in custody.
A search conducted during the operation led to the recovery of several incriminating items, including a pistol loaded with .32 ammunition, eleven BB cartridges, pepper spray, desert boots, a black pullover, and various mobile phones.
Under interrogation, Mohammed Ahmed confessed to his involvement in the Berekum Chelsea ambush, as well as prior criminal activities such as the Nkawie robbery and an attack on a mobile money vendor in Fufuso.
The police have officially declared three additional accomplices—identified as Dauda, Huefe, and A.T.—wanted and are urging the public to provide any information that might lead to their capture.
The police command praised the professionalism and persistence of the officers involved in the breakthrough and expressed gratitude for the community’s cooperation.
While the pursuit of the remaining fugitives continues, the authorities have assured the public that the suspects currently in custody will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
