The Media Coalition for Good Governance (MCGG) is calling on the Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Energy, to urgently declare the true state of the country’s worsening power outages.
The Coalition alleges that the government has failed to present an accurate account of the ongoing energy crisis.
Kwadwo Barfour, the Convener of the MCGG, criticised Energy Minister John Jinapor, accusing him of peddling falsehoods during a press briefing held on Monday, 27 April 2026.
According to Mr Barfour, at a time when homes, businesses, and essential services are being disrupted without warning, Ghanaians deserve honesty, certainty, and a clear plan, rather than unpredictable blackouts that undermine daily life and economic activity.
He stated that there must be absolute clarity on whether the country is experiencing a return to the period of “dumsor.”
He believes that if this is the case, a transparent and reliable load-shedding timetable must be published immediately to allow citizens and businesses to plan effectively.
This demand follows recent remarks by the Minister for Energy, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, who confirmed that a fire at the Akosombo Hydroelectric Power Plant has created a power deficit, resulting in supply disruptions across parts of the country.
While the Minister has assured the public that the government will not conceal the truth and has directed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to provide updates every 12 hours, Kwadwo Barfour asserted that periodic updates alone are insufficient.
In his view, the rapidly changing nature of the situation makes it even more critical for the government to adopt a structured and transparent communication approach.
He argued that the press conference was a needless exercise, asserting that without a clear timetable or predictable framework, households and businesses remain vulnerable to sudden outages that disrupt productivity, damage equipment, and increase the cost of living.
Mr Barfour stated: “He failed to tell Ghanaians what they needed to know. He lied and the unfortunate aspect is that he addressed the press at the seat of government, meaning the President and his cabinet were present and had endorsed the lies. It is also false for him to attribute the ongoing situation to the replacement of new transformers and the Akosombo fire incident. Kumasi, for example, has for the last year experienced unstable power supply. He also failed to tell us exactly the timelines for the ongoing transformer replacements. The truth is that our generation capacity has been badly affected.”
He further stressed that since this government took office, it has failed to take the necessary steps to address the existing deficit.
He noted that the demand for power has increased astronomically, with a record of almost 400 megawatts of additional consumption or demand recorded annually. This means that over the nearly two years since the government took over, the increase in demand reached 800 megawatts, yet no additional investments were made by the government to bridge the resulting deficit.
