The one-month ban on drumming and noise-making across the Ga Traditional Area commences today, Monday, 4 May, and is scheduled to conclude on Thursday, 4 June 2026.
According to a press release signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, all religious and social activities that produce excessive noise must cease entirely for the duration of this period.
The enforcement areas encompass several key locations, including communities surrounding the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Head Office, Ga Mashie, Ablekuma West, and Kasoa. Within these jurisdictions, churches have been directed to conduct services strictly within their premises and must refrain from using any musical instruments.
Furthermore, the use of loudspeakers positioned outside churches, mosques, and pubs is prohibited, while roadside evangelists are required to suspend their activities until the ban is officially lifted.
In addition to these noise restrictions, the Ga Traditional Council has imposed a moratorium on funeral rites and related activities.
This mandate ensures that no public mourning, processions, or burial ceremonies involving drumming or amplified sound take place.
To maintain social cohesion, both religious bodies and traditional authorities have been urged to foster mutual respect and prevent their followers from making derogatory or inflammatory remarks regarding the beliefs and practices of others.
To ensure strict compliance with these directives, an identifiable joint task force has been established, comprising personnel from the AMA, the Ghana Police Service, and representatives from the Traditional Councils.
The release clarified that all official members of this team will be required to wear identifying tags.
The AMA emphasised that no private individual or unauthorised group is permitted to enforce noise abatement measures.
The press release concluded by calling for cooperation, stating, “All are enjoined to abide by these guidelines,” and “For peace, harmony and national security.”
