The Convener for the Justice and Accountability Forum is demanding urgent updates from the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice regarding ongoing high-profile corruption cases currently before the courts.
Nana Bonsu noted that the Attorney-General had previously assured Ghanaians that several former government appointees would face justice for various acts of corruption.
These alleged offenses include stealing, money laundering, embezzlement, fraud, and causing financial loss to the state.
However, speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Bonsu expressed concern that the Attorney-General now appears to be handling these cases far too slowly.
He emphasized that the ultimate goal must be the full retrieval of all stolen state resources.
“The Attorney-General used to provide us with regular updates; however, these updates have stopped,” Bonsu stated.
“We were told that certain individuals had stolen state funds and needed to be prosecuted. But why is he quiet now? Why is he not providing any updates? We keep losing resources constantly without retrieving them, even though we still face major challenges with access to clean drinking water and stable power supply. We could retrieve all this stolen money and invest it in resolving these crises. The level of corruption is alarming, and we can no longer tolerate it. We should not waste time handling these cases, otherwise, a new government might take over and withdraw all the ongoing cases from court.”
To prevent such delays, Bonsu reiterated the need for the government to expedite the establishment of specialized fast-track courts to ensure these corruption cases are resolved within the shortest possible time.
Meanwhile, the convener also expressed deep worry over the effectiveness of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
He pointed out that while individuals regularly appear before the committee for severe financial infractions, actual prosecutions rarely follow.
“The Public Accounts Committee is always sitting and citing people for breaches, but what is the end game?” Bonsu questioned. “Simply arresting people and sending them to EOCO or the BNI is not what matters most. Retrieving the stolen money is the most important thing.”
