Samuel Atta Akyea, lead counsel for Bernard Antwi Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi—has requested an extension of time from the Accra High Court to file his written address ahead of the July 3 judgment.
Chairman Wontumi is currently facing charges for mining without the requisite permit from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
The legal transition follows the withdrawal of Andrew Appiah-Kubi, who previously represented the politician in the Samreboi case.
Atta Akyea indicated to journalists that the extension is necessary to thoroughly familiarize himself with the case proceedings, ensuring he can provide the best possible defense for his client.
Chairman Wontumi expressed absolute confidence that the newly appointed lead counsel will take all necessary legal steps to safeguard his constitutional right to a fair hearing.
This includes comprehensively reviewing the record of proceedings and making any required submissions or applications.
Reiterating his faith in the judicial process, the politician emphasized that the case must be guided by the Constitution, Ghanaian law, and the principles of justice.
While acknowledging the gravity of the charges against him, Mr. Wontumi remains committed to defending himself through due process.
He maintains that as an accused person, he is entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty, with the burden of proof resting entirely on the prosecution to establish every element of the alleged offenses beyond a reasonable doubt.
