The Greater Accra Region is set to see the demolition of 16 structurally compromised buildings, according to Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak.
This proactive measure aims to avert future casualties linked to structural failures.
The announcement follows a tragic three-story building collapse in Avenor, North Kaneshie, on Sunday, June 7, which resulted in two fatalities and three injuries.
During an inspection of the collapse site, Muntaka informed reporters that the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) had previously flagged multiple hazardous structures deemed unsafe for residents.
He emphasised that authorities are actively working to clear out occupants and dismantle these high-risk properties before further disasters occur.
“Currently, NADMO has identified about 16 buildings within the Greater Accra Region that have to come down. We are going to ensure that, coming into the week, they will go and get all those buildings down.
“We are currently doing the evacuations, and they must bring all those buildings down. I mean, some things are natural, and God will take care of the supernatural, but for the natural ones, we have to take care of them.”
