President John Dramani Mahama has directed the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and a national task force to conduct a comprehensive assessment of Accra’s restricted and protected lands.

The directive aims to identify encroached, vulnerable, and unauthorized development zones to combat the capital’s recurring floods.

Upon returning from the UK and Belarus on Tuesday, June 9, the President briefed his cabinet at the Accra International Airport, emphasizing the immediacy of the mapping project.

“I have directed the task force, NADMO and all the others to do a presentation to us. We are going to identify all the restricted waterways,”** he stated.

Once the report is submitted, relevant authorities will be empowered to secure protected zones and halt further encroachment.

Regarding the subsequent enforcement, Mahama cleared the path for action:”When they have done that, I am giving the directive that they should go ahead to do what they have to do”.

While acknowledging that strict enforcement—including potential demolitions—might spark public criticism, the President urged citizens to view these interventions as vital for long-term urban resilience rather than harsh state action.

“I hope when we do that [possible demolition], all Ghanaians will understand that it is the government’s business to protect the safety of all of us,” he noted.
