The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced that a Ghana Card registration exercise for Ghanaian children aged 6 to 14 years will commence in the Northern Region on Thursday, 11th June 2026.

According to a statement issued by the Authority, this initiative is being carried out in close collaboration with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).

This upcoming regional phase follows the successful completion of similar exercises in the Volta and Oti Regions.

In those areas, a mop-up registration exercise is currently underway to ensure that any eligible children who missed the initial rollout are successfully captured in the system.

The strategy for the Northern Region will mirror the previous phases, prioritising accessibility by bringing registration teams directly to educational institutions.

“As with the previous phase, registration teams will move from school to school, both public and private, to ensure extensive coverage. Registration will take place daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Children within the 6 – 14 age bracket who do not attend school may visit any designated registration centre or school within their locality to register” the statement read.

To facilitate a smooth process, parents and guardians are advised to prepare the necessary documentation before visiting the stations. They are expected to present their wards’ original birth certificates, valid Ghanaian passports, or Certificates of Acquired Citizenship.

However, the NHIA noted that alternative verification methods are available for families lacking these primary documents. Parents, relatives, or guardians can instead complete an Oath of Identity form to authorize the child’s registration.

The statement outlined the documentation requirements and legal guidelines as follows:”Parents and guardians are required to present the child’s original Birth Certificate, valid Ghanaian Passport, or Certificate of Acquired Citizenship. Where these documents are unavailable, a parent, relative, or legal guardian may complete an Oath of Identity form. For children without known relatives, two Social Welfare Officers may vouch for the child under oath.
Parents and guardians are also encouraged to present the child’s NHIS card or NHIS number where available. Persons presenting children for registration must be Ghanaian, at least 18 years of age, of sound mind, and in possession of a valid Ghana Card.”

As the exercise begins, the Authority has extended an appeal to families, educators, and traditional authorities across the region to actively cooperate and ensure the program’s success. The NIA also issued a strict reminder regarding the legal responsibilities bound to the registration process.

“The NIA urges all parents, guardians, school authorities, traditional leaders, and community stakeholders within the Northern Region to support and participate in the exercise. The Authority further reminds the public that providing false information or facilitating the registration of a non-Ghanaian constitutes an offence and is punishable under the law.”
