The Accra High Court has approved a request by the Attorney-General and defense lawyers to begin plea bargain negotiations for Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi.
The NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman is facing trial alongside Wontumi Farms Limited and Thomas Antwi-Boasiako, who remains at large.
The prosecution formally notified the court of the negotiation request following a written interest submitted by Wontumi’s legal counsel.
Wontumi is charged with defrauding by false pretences, causing financial loss to a public body, money laundering, and uttering a forged document.
Prosecutors allege that between 2018 and 2022, Wontumi and his co-accused fraudulently secured a GH¢14.302 million loan from the Ghana Export-Import Bank.
He is specifically accused of presenting a forged receipt to bank officials to obtain an additional GH¢4 million, laundering a portion of the illicit loan, and ultimately causing a total financial loss exceeding GH¢30 million to EXIM Bank.
Case proceedings are on hold while both parties engage in the plea negotiations.
