Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak, has ordered an instant freeze on all valid gun permits across the nation, launching a major overhaul of the country’s weapon regulation framework.
The mandate becomes active at midday on Tuesday, 23 June, as part of wider initiatives to enhance monitoring, ensure responsibility, and bolster national safety.
He disclosed this atba press conference on Tuesday June, 23, 2026.
The minister noted that the measure became vital after uncovering vulnerabilities in the firearm registration process, such as regulatory violations and the inappropriate use of authorised arms.
“Everybody in Ghana who currently holds a legitimate license to hold a gun, today (Tuesday, June 23), I am suspending all of it. All of it that everybody is holding,” he said.
He explained that this enables officials to perform a thorough review and reorganisation of the weapon management framework.
“Because we have realised a new phenomenon which is threatening public safety,” he noted.
This development comes on the heels of a shooting incident involving Ms Adwoa Safo at a premises connected to Israel Safo within the Greater Accra Region.
The confrontation is tied to a bitter leadership conflict inside the Kristo Asafo Mission, which emerged after its founder, Apostle Professor Kwadwo Safo, passed away in September 2025.
