The Party Will Protect Nobody’: Mahdi Gibril promises level playing field for NDC branch elections

June 23, 2026
Gibrill

Mahdi Gibril, the Acting Director of Elections for the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), has indicated that the party’s delegates will decide the fate of all aspiring candidates seeking to contest in the upcoming branch elections.

He noted that the party will protect no one, and any candidate who wishes to run will have to allow the delegates to decide.

He further explained that eligible party members will evaluate all those contesting to choose the individual they trust can best manage the party.

The politician stated that gone are the days when NDC members complained that families had hijacked the leadership of the party.

Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, he noted that the party has made the process and systems free and fair, allowing all interested persons to contest.

He indicated that about 85 per cent of the branches have people contesting unopposed, demonstrating that they have distinguished themselves well and worked hard for the party.

He also advised incumbent leaders facing contests from other aspirants not to view their contenders as threats.

“The recent process has been fair and the interest it has generated shows that we have done our best. The contenders should know that they will be judged by the work they have done and not anything else. We have ensured that the system is free and fair. Nobody will be cheated. Those who will vote will decide the elections. The party will not protect anybody. We will work on improving the systems going forward. But we believe we have done our best. About 85 per cent of the branches are going unopposed, demonstrating their sacrifices and dedication to the NDC.”

He commended party members for the trust they have placed in the party and assured them that the ongoing reorganisation process will certainly yield positive results.
