Firefighters from the Volta Regional Headquarters of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) successfully rescued a maintenance worker trapped inside a malfunctioning lift at the National Communications Authority (NCA) regional office on Thursday afternoon.
The incident, which occurred at the NCA premises near the Kabore School Complex in Ho, initially left two male workers stranded inside the elevator shaft during routine maintenance work.
The GNFS responded to a distress call at 1:29 pm, dispatching an emergency rescue crew to the scene. Arriving within six minutes, the team, under the supervision of Divisional Officer Grade Three (DO III) Victor Kudoadzi, immediately began an assessment to extricate the remaining worker.
Prior to the arrival of the fire service, one of the trapped technicians had already been freed by colleagues. He was quickly transported to the Ho Teaching Hospital for medical evaluation.
Using specialist technical rescue equipment and procedures, the arriving firefighters managed to safely release the second worker from the faulty lift. Aside from the initial hospitalisation of the first worker, no further injuries were reported amongst the staff or the rescue team.
An investigation into the mechanical failure that caused the elevator to stall is currently underway.
Following the successful operation, the GNFS regional command praised the swift response and professionalism of the responding crew.
The service also issued a public advisory, urging property owners and managers to implement regular inspections and stringent maintenance schedules for all lifts to prevent similar hazards.
