Adwoa Safo’s lawyers petition AG to transfer shooting case to High Court

June 28, 2026

Lawyers for former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, have petitioned the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice to transfer a criminal case tied to her alleged shooting from the Adenta Circuit Court to the High Court.

The petition, dated June 25, 2026, argues that the Adenta Circuit Court lacks jurisdiction because the principal offense constitutes a first-degree felony, which must be tried by the High Court.

The former lawmaker was reportedly shot multiple times on June 21 while inside her vehicle outside the residence of her brother, Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena.

The petition notes that she sustained severe injuries to her face, head, ear, and lower jaw, leaving bullet fragments lodged in her skull, while her Toyota Land Cruiser Prado suffered visible gunshot damage.

Following the incident, the former MP’s brother and eight others were arrested, arraigned, and granted GH¢500,000 bail each with two sureties.

The accused face charges including the use of an offensive weapon, possession of explosives, firearms, and ammunition, vigilante activities, discharging guns in town, and causing unlawful damage.

Commenting onnthe charges, the lawyers for the former MP stted that
the charge of using an offensive weapon to intentionally cause harm elevates the matter beyond the Circuit Court’s authority.

“Respectfully, the offence of intentionally and unlawfully causing harm with the use of an offensive weapon is a first-degree felony and is triable on indictment before the High Court, not the Circuit Court,” the petition stated.

The lawyers further contended that the Circuit Court “lacks jurisdiction to entertain the matter, let alone consider an application for bail in respect of the Accused persons.”

“In view of the aforesaid, we have been duly instructed to petition your office to call for the docket, review and have the case filed at the High Court for the matter to go through full trial in an expeditious manner,” the petition said.

The petition was copied to the Deputy Attorney-General, the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Presiding Judge of the Adenta Circuit Court, the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the CID, the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, and Sarah Adwoa Safo.
