Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Clement Apaak, has expressed concern over what he describes as the growing commercialization of graduation ceremonies, urging schools and parents to ensure such events remain focused on celebrating academic achievement rather than the display of wealth.
Speaking at the 2026 Graduation and Awards Ceremony of Springforth Community School in Accra on Saturday, Dr. Apaak said the Ministry of Education has observed a worrying trend where some school completion ceremonies have become platforms for ostentatious displays instead of recognizing students’ hard work and perseverance.
He noted that while parents have every reason to celebrate the accomplishments of their children, such celebrations should not create unnecessary social pressure on families or distort the values that education seeks to promote.
“In recent times, we have witnessed a worrying trend where some school completion ceremonies have become platforms for the ostentatious display of wealth rather than celebrations of academic achievement and personal growth,” he stated.
According to Dr. Apaak, the Ministry has already taken steps to reinforce the values that should guide graduation ceremonies across the country.
“There is nothing wrong with parents celebrating the success of their children. However, we must ensure that our celebrations do not create unnecessary social pressures or send the wrong message that success is measured by material possessions rather than character, hard work, and excellence,” he said.
He stressed that education should focus on equipping children with knowledge, critical thinking skills, and values that prepare them for life rather than encouraging extravagant displays.
“The most valuable gift we can offer our children is not a luxury item, but the opportunity to learn, think critically, innovate, and contribute meaningfully to society,” he emphasised.
Dr. Apaak congratulated the graduating class and commended parents and teachers for their sacrifices, urging students to pursue excellence and uphold integrity as they advance in their educational journey.
