Torrential dawn rains on Monday, June 29, 2026, have submerged major parts of the capital, trapping residents and paralyzing commuters across the Greater Accra Region.
The downpour, which began in the early hours of Monday morning, quickly overwhelmed the city’s drainage infrastructure, turning critical highways into impassable rivers.
Commuters heading into the central business district face severe gridlock as primary transit corridors suffer near-total blockages.
The Weija-Kasoa Road is completely cut off, halting vehicular movement between the Central Region and Accra.
Key stretches of the N1 highway are under water, forcing drivers to abandon their vehicles.
Traffic has also ground to a halt near the Fiesta Royale Hotel and along the stretch from the Ghana Standards Authority toward Shiashie, where only a single lane remains accessible to daring motorists.
Further north, the Atomic Roundabout is entirely flooded and blocked, while the Legon-GIMPA By-Pass Road has been cut off near the new Law School building due to rising waters.
In low-lying residential areas like Alajo, the situation remains critical as floodwaters breach homes, leaving dozens of residents stranded and waiting for emergency assistance.
National disaster management officials are urging residents in affected enclaves to seek higher ground and avoid attempting to drive or wade through the rising floods.
