Forty-four suspects have been arrested in Ghana’s Ashanti region after police dismantled a major drug distribution network allegedly targeting university students.

The Inspector-General of Police Special Operations Team, alongside regional forces, launched a series of intelligence-led raids across the Kumasi Metropolis between 3 and 5 July.

The targeted operations spanned several criminal hotspots, including Emena New Site, Boadi, Abuabo, and Ash Town.

Among the 44 individuals detained are 41 men and three women, held on various narcotics-related charges.

Officers confirmed that the network specialized in manufacturing and marketing drug-infused products explicitly aimed at young people in higher education.

Three principal suspects have been named by law enforcement.
Emmanuel Duah, 24, is accused of producing cannabis-laced toffees and advertising them online to students.

Richard Boateng, 45, allegedly manufactured cannabis-infused alcoholic beverages, while Frederick Agyei has been identified as a primary supplier of raw cannabis to the student communities.
During the raids, authorities seized a substantial cache of illicit goods. This included 200 sachets of 225mg Tramadol, quantities of 250mg Tramadol tablets, 400 sealed wraps of suspected narcotics, and a locally prepared fruit juice known as “Femude”, which is believed to be spiked.

Officers also confiscated a double-door refrigerator filled with illicit concoctions and nine casino jackpot machines.
In a statement, the Head of the Public Affairs Unit for the region, Deputy Superintendent Godwin Ahianyo, confirmed that the investigation remains active.

“All exhibits have been secured for forensic examination and evidential purposes, while the suspects remain in police custody assisting with investigations,” Superintendent Ahianyo said. “The Ghana Police Service is pursuing additional suspects believed to be connected to the alleged drug distribution network with the aim of dismantling every link in the supply chain and bringing all those involved to justice.”
The Police Service reiterated its commitment to protecting educational institutions and urged members of the public to continue providing credible information to assist law enforcement.
