Firefighters and emergency response teams are currently assessing the scene of a terrifying accident along the Dzorwulu to Accra Mall stretch of the N1 highway, where a loaded tipper truck rammed into a stationary Benz Sprinter bus carrying 11 young pupils.
The victims, all lower primary children aged between 3 and 10 years old, were reportedly returning from Ashaiman towards Accra when the incident occurred. Contrary to initial reports suggesting the pupils were on a school excursion, preliminary findings reveal they were on a routine commute.
According to preliminary investigations, the driver of the tipper truck made an illegal overtaking manoeuvre, losing control before crashing violently into the stationary Sprinter bus parked along the road.
Despite early fears of fatalities given the severity of the impact, emergency services have confirmed that all 11 children survived the crash.
However, several of the young victims sustained severe injuries and remain in critical condition.
The injured children were rushed to the 37 Military Hospital and the Police Hospital, where medical teams are working around the clock to stabilise them.
Traffic on the stretch experienced significant gridlock following the crash as rescue teams cleared the wreckage and secured the highway.
Police and fire personnel remain at the site conducting a comprehensive assessment, while investigations into the exact circumstances surrounding the collision continue.
